Kuwarna’s partnership with BHP is set to extend beyond a decade with the Club signing a further three-year extension to the end of 2028.
BHP will remain Co-Major sponsor of Kuwarna’s AFLW team, continuing its strong support for the growth of women’s football. As part of the partnership, BHP’s logo will feature on the AFLW playing guernsey.
BHP has been a partner of the Club since 2017 and has held a prominent presence at home games throughout the AFLW season. Under the renewed partnership, BHP continues to be the official home match sponsor for both the AFL Sir Doug Nicholls and AFLW Indigenous Round games.
Through the renewed partnership, BHP will support the Club’s STEM Footy program aligned to the Australian curriculum to regional communities across the state.
Through the support of the partnership, the Club made seven trips to the Upper Spencer Gulf region to deliver STEM Footy in 2024, reaching over 600 students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and almost 50 per cent female participation.
Kuwarna’s players and staff will also embark on regional visits to the Upper Spencer Gulf, Roxby Downs, and Coober Pedy, where they will deliver mass participation clinics for children and support the development of female football in Port Augusta and Whyalla by providing uniforms, equipment, and other essential resources.
Kuwarna CEO Tim Silvers said the new deal reflected the long-standing partnership between the Club and BHP which was committed to growing the game and providing opportunities and pathways for young women to play at the highest level.
“The contribution BHP has made to our AFLW program since 2017 has been significant and it has helped us to enjoy sustained on and off field success,” Silvers said.
“Just as importantly it has enabled thousands of young boys and girls to see our women’s team compete on the national stage and give them a clear pathway to aspire to.
“This is in addition to the work BHP is doing in the community space with the Club through its commitment to Sir Doug Nicholls Round and taking the game to remote and regional communities through clinics and school visits.”
BHP Asset President Copper SA, Anna Wiley, said BHP was proud to announce the continuation of the partnership, reaffirming its commitment to building stronger and more resilient communities across the state.
"We are proud of our successful partnership with the Adelaide Football Club AFLW team since 2017 and the collective impact and promotion of the role that sport plays in inclusion, diversity, and education,” Wiley said.
“It has been wonderful to see women’s and girls’ football thrive in South Australia, and we are pleased to have been able to play our small part in supporting that.
"The STEM Footy program is a testament to our shared vision of empowering young minds and fostering a love for STEM subjects, particularly in regional and Indigenous communities. By integrating sports and education, we are inspiring the next generation of leaders and innovators, ensuring they have the tools and opportunities to succeed.”
