Kuwarna forward Josh Rachele’s standout performance against Waalitj Marawar helped lift his side to a 66-point win - but it’s going to cost him a coffee.
Rachele booted an equal career-high five goals, as Kuwarna prevailed 19.14 (128) to 8.14 (62) at Adelaide Oval in week two of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
But speaking to AFC Media post-game, the 22-year-old credited a teammate for helping him get on the scoresheet and said he would buy him a coffee to say thank you.
“I don’t want to get too carried away, but I was pretty happy to get on the scoreboard and get on the end of a few today,” Rachele said.
“I just bought my excitement and was able to finish off my work well.
“But credit to Izak (Rankine) too, he gave me a couple (of goals) as well, so I think I owe him a coffee for that.”
Waalitj Marawar brought the pressure in the first half, as the hosts narrowly led by six points at the first change, and then 17 at the main break.
Kuwarna flew out the blocks to start the third quarter, kicking 7.7 from 23 inside 50s – including two goals in the space of a minute from Rachele - which helped build the match-winning lead.
“We knew they were going to bring the fight, especially after a big win the week before,” Rachele said.
“We found we probably weren’t playing our best footy in the first half as well, but I thought the second half was a lot better.
“The more games we are playing together, the better. We all enjoy each other’s company and it makes it better when we are winning games.”
Kuwarna will now switch its attention to a clash against Sydney at the SCG next Saturday night.
Rachele said the focus would quickly turn to recovery with a five-day break.
“We know it’s going to be a challenge, we’ve got a hard next three weeks without looking too far ahead, we are just looking at the process, one step at a time,” Rachele said.
“We’ll recover well over the next few days and hopefully we can get the chocolates in Sydney.”
