Adelaide’s SANFL side put together a complete four-quarter performance to defeat Woodville-West Torrens by 100 points at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
The Crows controlled the momentum early and from then on were clinical, highlighted by booting eight goals in the final term to prevail 22.17 (149) to 7.7 (49).
The match served as a curtain raiser to the Club's AFL game against Melbourne and allowed the Crows to hold third spot on the SANFL ladder.
Here are the five key takeaways from the match.
Four-quarter display
It was a complete team performance for Adelaide, with all three lines equally contributing to the win.
Adelaide’s defenders limited the Eagles to just seven goals from their 33 entries, the midfielders dominated at stoppage to win the clearances 46 to 26, and the forwards made the most of their opportunities booting 22 goals.
SANFL Senior Coach Matthew Wright was pleased with the consistent performance his side showed across all four terms.
“We always want to play the game in our half and I thought we did that for large chunks today,” Wright said.
“The thing that really impressed me, and it didn’t surprise me, was the ability for our boys to be in a pocket and square it up to someone to have a better shot.
“I thought our ability to play team football which rewarded 22 players as opposed to 10 getting on the end of it was most pleasing for me.”
Classy Cook
Forward Brayden Cook showed his class in front of the big sticks, converting from snaps, set shots and on the run to finish with four goals.
Entering the game in a strong patch of form – having now kicked 10 goals from his past five matches – Cook again showed his forward craft, getting into dangerous positions where he was able to impact.
“Cooky is such a silky, skilful player and we know if we give him enough opportunities ball in hand he is going to go to work, which was impressive,” Wright said.
“For me it’s his ability to want to hunt the opposition and lock the ball in the forward 50, that’s probably where his game has improved, he’s really bought into that.”
Cook finished with 15 disposals, six marks, two tackles and three inside 50s.
Jones enjoying time on-ball
AFL-listed on-baller Chayce Jones continued his strong form through the middle of the ground, winning multiple clearances to give Adelaide first use.
Since making the switch from the wing to an inside midfielder a month ago, Jones has relished the opportunity to be amongst Adelaide’s top disposal getters each week.
“The last four weeks since he has played as an on-baller, he’s probably been one of our best mids, if not our best mid,” said Wright.
“Really pleasing for him is he is getting his hands on the footy, he is using it really well and his leadership has been fantastic for the group.”
Jones finished with a game-high 28 disposals, five tackles, eight clearances and five inside 50s.
Murray keeps building
Defender Nick Murray made his presence felt down back, effective when intercept marking or spoiling to limit the Eagles' inside 50s effectiveness.
Murray along with his fellow backmen were disciplined with how they set up behind the ball, resulting in Adelaide being able to keep the ball in its forward half.
“Muzz has played a few games now since coming back, his balance between spoils and getting the ball to ground or intercept marking has been really impressive,” Wright said.
“His game is getting back to a level now where he’s putting his hand up (for selection).”
Murray finished with 20 disposals, seven marks and five rebound 50s.
Pedlar displays toughness
Forward Luke Pedlar returned from a corked quad which kept him out last week to have an immediate impact.
The 23-year-old split his time between the forward and midfield.
Pedlar showed his toughness, bringing his trademark energy and impact around the ball, with Wright impressed by how he battled through the game for the team despite playing with some soreness.
“We always know we are going to get a response from Peds; he had to play through a little bit of injury today and copped a couple of knocks,” Wright said.
“His ability to fight through that and stay out there and help the team and then have a real impact on the game is impressive.”
Pedlar finished with 24 disposals, six marks, four clearances, six inside 50s and booted one goal.
Adelaide’s SANFL side will play Glenelg next Saturday at Glenelg Oval with the first bounce at 2:10pm.
