Adelaide defender Jordon Butts has described what it was like to finally tick off a long-awaited career milestone.
It took Butts 87 senior games but against the Western Bulldogs last Friday, Butts finally slotted through a major.
The goal capped a career-best game for the 26-year-old, who finished the game with 19 disposals, 12 marks and 11 intercept possessions.
Speaking on this week’s episode of The Crows Show, Butts reflected on the special moment.
“It was a little bit foreign, being in the forward half and having a set-shot,” Butts said.
“I just went back and was lucky enough to kick it straight.
“It was an unbelievable experience.
“Doing it at a home game as well, and having my teammates get around me was great. The support from all the boys was unbelievable.”
Despite his standout individual performance, Butts said team defence was more important than ever now, with the new rules introduced allowing opposition teams to move the ball quicker.
“I do feel that teams are moving the ball a lot quicker, they’re accessing the corridor a lot more, and it’s tougher to defend,” Butts said.
“We try and work out how to defend as a whole team, so our forwards and our mids are helping put pressure on the ball which gives us backs an opportunity to get a hand in and spoil, or get into a good position to try and intercept the ball.
“I feel like our whole backline group is doing a good job of that at the moment, coming down and supporting each other.
“Every team has a star forward, so they’re all looking out for them and trying to get the footy in their hands. I love the challenge of defending these big-name players.”
