Adelaide forward Taylor Walker says his half-time exchange with teammates was aimed at sparking a response after the Crows went into the main break against Fremantle 25 points down.
Walker engaged in an intense chat with teammates as the half-time siren sounded at Adelaide Oval onThursday night, following the hosts’ sluggish first two quarters.
Despite wrestling the momentum back their way, the Crows’ final-quarter surge just fell short as the Dockers stormed home to claim a two-point win.
Walker, a 304-game veteran and Adelaide’s record goalkicker, said he knew an honest conversation was needed to help get his team back in the game.
“I probably couldn’t even tell you what I said - it was a little bit of frustration - but I think we are all grown men, so we had a great conversation about what we needed to do in the second half,” Walker said.
“We probably showed what we are capable of, so our challenge now is being able to do that for four quarters. I thought it was pretty chalk and cheese from the first half to the second half.
“We know footy is a tough game but we need to stay in the fight a lot longer not just here and there, which is where we need to continue to get better.”
A goal to Walker almost seven minutes into the fourth quarter put the Crows in front, before Skipper Jordan Dawson kicked another to extend the margin to 10 points.
Fremantle, however, refused to surrender, and quick majors to Shai Bolton and Josh Treacy sealed the visitors’ victory.
Walker said another narrow loss hurt but he was confident in the Crows’ ability to turn their season around.
“(We are) disappointed, but I do see some blue sky there. If you look at our results, we are one and three, but we've only lost by a kick in all three games,” Walker said.
“We understand where we sit, we just have to sort ourselves out around the ball and our contest stuff. If we can tidy up a few things… It's certainly going to go a long way to helping us get our season back on track.
He also lauded the performance of midfielder James Peatling, who finished with 26 disposals, five tackles, eight clearances, 526 metres gained and a goal.
“Since coming over he (Peatling) has fitted in really well and we know what class he brings through the midfield," Walker said.
“He was able to go forward and kick that goal, so he’s super important for us and it was great to see him in form tonight.”
The Crows have yet another short break with their Gather Round match coming up against Carlton next Thursday night.
Walker expected the Blues to put up a fight after a tough loss and hoped to once again see Adelaide Oval packed with Crows fans to help lift the team.
“The sun comes up, everyone needs a chocolate and to celebrate (Easter) with their families, we learn a little bit more from the game and get on with it,” Walker said.
“Every game in football is hard, now, so we are looking forward to Gather Round and hopefully getting back on the winners’ list.
“We are so lucky to play at Adelaide Oval every second week. Especially with it being Easter, you could argue that a lot of people’s priority would be with family, but I suppose we are part of their family, and we are very grateful they showed up.”
