Looking back at the 2001 AFL Draft, Brent Reilly concedes the order would definitely “flip around” if you were to reselect it today.

Reilly was taken by Adelaide with pick No.12 in what is widely known as the ‘Superdraft’, given what the talent has produced during their careers.

Between them, the 2001 crop of draftees has won 34 premierships and claimed six Brownlow medals and six Norm Smith medals.

While the top three draftees have all gone on to be stars in their own right – Luke Hodge (four premierships, two Norm Smith’s), Luke Ball (one premiership) and Chris Judd (one premiership, two Brownlow’s) – it was the depth of talent in the draft that made it stand out.

Four-time premiership star and Brownlow medallist Sam Mitchell was taken at pick No.36 and Gary Ablett, a two-time premiership player and two-time Brownlow winner was a father-son selection at pick No.40.

Dane Swan slipped down to pick No.58 and went on to also win a premiership and Brownlow medal, while Brian Lake won three premierships and a Norm Smith after being selected at pick No.71.

PICK SWAP: Crows secure pick No. 22

Reflecting on the draft, Reilly said it was lucky there was so much talent coming through at the time.

“The draft would flip if you looked at it back, but you look at the whole draft and it was all pretty talented,” Reilly said.

“The players that have come through there, a lot of them played over 200 games, premiership players, Brownlow medallists.

“You look at those guys that slipped through the gaps initially for those couple of years leading up, Mitchell, Swan, Lake.

“They always say it is the top 10 or top 20 who are pretty good, but the whole draft was pretty special and talented.”

PICK NO. 6: Who will the Crows take?

Reilly said he was fortunate to play alongside so many talented players as a youngster.

“It’s just luck of the draw that I grew up at that time and the age group had that talent pool,” he said.

“We all played against and with each other, in Vic Metro or TAC Cup which was a really strong competition.

“We had some good players coming through like Judd, Ball, Leigh Montagna, Luke Dal Santo, so I was very, very lucky to play in that team.”
