Strong. Contested. Always team-first. Leader.

These are just some of the words Kuwarna SANFL coach Matthew Wright uses to describe development player, Jay Boyle.

Wright could now also add “history-maker” to that list, because Boyle rewrote Club records earlier this month, becoming the first development player to play 100 SANFL games for Kuwarna.

And for Wright, it’s the same sentiment that has made Boyle so important to the Club: his ability to work well with his teammates, no matter who they are.

“Jay has an ability to blend our AFL-listed – which varies from a Brodie Smith at times who’s played 250-plus games, to first-year players who are playing their league debuts for the footy club – with our development boys and be a really good conduit for coaches,” Wright said.

“All while playing really consistent league footy. He’s played important roles for our team in negating the opposition’s best players … he’s our go-to if we need to shut someone out of the game.

“And he’s a leader, too; he leads by example and has a football mind and understands the game … when he comes off, as a coach, you pick up the phone and talk to him because he’s got a real good sense of how the game’s going.

“He’s been really important for this footy club.”

Boyle made his SANFL league debut with Glenelg in 2017 playing five games for the Bays, before exiting the State League at the end of that season.

He then made a return when Kuwarna signed him as a development player in 2021.

But this isn’t Boyle’s only achievement of note in the tri-colours.

The 28-year-old is the second-only Kuwarna player to hit the 100-SANFL game milestone (the other being Kieran Strachan, who reached it late last season, having been an AFL-listed player since 2018).

Boyle has also played the equal-most SANFL Finals for the Club – eight – alongside Wright, Strachan, James Borlase and Brayden Cook.

He is also a triple Dean Bailey SANFL Development Player Award winner (2022, 2023 and 2025).

Now in his sixth season with Kuwarna, Boyle says one of the most rewarding things about his 100 games to date has been playing alongside so many teammates in the early stages of their careers, watching them then progress into the AFL side.

“It’s been special to be able to play consistently at SANFL level for as long as I have,” Boyle said.

“And to have done it at the Crows has meant I’ve played with heaps of different players.

“I just want all my friends to play well, and it’s been awesome seeing so many of the guys I’ve played a lot of SANFL with, go on and do well at AFL level – the likes of Sam Berry, Brayden Cook, Josh Worrell.”

The fact that Boyle has played 100 games as a development player, leaves Wright with nothing but praise for him.

“His commitment to the program, commitment to wanting to help develop the kids but also win and test himself at the highest level, is a testament to Jay,” Wright says.

Wright and Boyle played together alongside each other when Boyle arrived at the Club in 2021 until Wright retired in 2023 and then transitioned into his current coaching role.

“I really enjoyed playing footy with Jay because he just gets it,” Wright says.

“He’s physical and plays it the right way.”

But Wright does single out one on-field moment in particular.

“I remember one day out at Prospect, we’re playing North Adelaide, and Jay has a shot from outside 50 - he’s kicked a heap of beautiful, long goals, he’s known for his long goals – and this one day, I’m standing on the goal line and he kicks this long shot and I’m not quite sure if it was going over or not, so I mark it on the line and probably stole his goal, which we still laugh about now.

“But if I close my eyes and think about it, he’s contest-to-contest, wins the clearance, gets its going forward and then presses the game and gets involved again; he’s done that so well over the years.”

On the topic of Boyle’s goal-kicking, there’s another accolade to his name: he has also kicked the most goals by a SANFL development player in the Club’s history - 39.

His achievements continue to mount.

As they will on when he faces his former side in his 101th SANFL game at Glenelg Oval on Saturday afternoon.
