Crows AFLW Captain and three-time premiership winner Ebony Marinoff has opened up while answering fans’ biggest questions on this week’s episode of the Crows Chat podcast.
From which Crows AFL player deserves more recognition outside the four walls, to the teammate who’s most likely to complete a marathon under three hours, and the toughest feedback she’s received, Marinoff spills the tea.
What’s the toughest feedback you’ve ever received from a coach?
“This is a hard one, I feel like, in terms of AFLW, (that I was) lazy, if you’re looking at clips.
“It’s hard because I don’t really have a moment. CJ (Courtney Cramey) who has been my mids coach for as long as I can remember, is always very honest, but I don’t know if I don’t see it as tough because I love feedback.
“If I’m watching a clip and I’m being lazy and haven’t got to the next contest, that’s always tough to swallow because you’re like ‘I should be better than that’,
“But I love feedback… so I don’t have one defining moment.”
Which men’s player at the Adelaide Crows needs more recognition outside of the four walls?
“Zaccy Taylor. I just think internally he’s not flying under the radar, externally he is flying under the radar.
“I just think what he’s been able to do for the team and his role, under the guidance of Alex Neal-Bullen who’s come here and really impacted him in that small forward role.
“I also have to go with Luke Nankervis, but I feel like he’s starting to get recognition. That brings us back to that moment against Sydney, Zaccy Taylor makes the tackle against (Nick) Blakey and then Nank kicks the goal.”
Who do you think would be the next Captain of both the men’s and women’s program at the Crows?
“We’ll start with the W, Eloise Jones just stepped into the Vice-Captain role, she’s been in the leadership group for many years now, so I think she could easily slip in to be our next Captain.
“In the men’s… I don’t know. I have always respected Taylor Walker and now obviously Jordan Dawson, but Darcy Fogarty reminds me a bit of Tex.
“The way he presents himself on game day, a real team-first man, and he’s got a mannerism that I’m like ‘oh interesting’.
“Also, I wouldn't know enough to (comment).
“But I don’t see Jordan Dawson not being the sole Captain of the footy Club for many years to come.
“I think Darcy Fogarty, Max Michalanney, we can go left field like Jakey Soligo in a few years, you never know, but there’s a few names.”
If you had to choose one Crow out of the AFLW program to complete a marathon under three hours, who would it be?
“Sarah Goodwin. I don’t know who’s doing that right now, but Goody grew up in a triathlon sporting world, she was a runner, she was a swimmer, she could bike ride, so I reckon if she put herself in, she could.
“Sarah Goodwin and I actually ran a half marathon two years ago, we went to do it one day, I didn’t give her notice… so we weren’t well prepared.”
What’s the craziest pre-game ritual you or a teammate has ever had?
“I don’t know. I love this question… but sometimes you just haven’t come across something that’s crazy.”
