What’s your home town, and where is it?

Swan Hill. It’s on the Murray River, 320km from Melbourne, 270km from Mildura and 520km from Adelaide.

Swan Hill is in the northwest of Victoria, on the Murray Valley Highway and on the south bank of the Murray River.

Anything interesting or weird about the town?

It is the home of a Murray Cod (statue) the size of a house.

Apparently 51% of Australia’s stonefruit is produced in the area

Any famous people from there?

Can’t think of any!

What’s the local footy team?

I played for two clubs there, Tyntynder and Lake Boga. They play in the Central Murray Football Netball League, an 11-team competition.

Has it produced any other AFL footballers?

Bob Rose

Bob Rose is a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame. He played 152 VFL games for Collingwood from 1946-55, won four club best-and-fairest awards, and was named in Collingwood’s Team of the Century. He also coached Collingwood and Footscray.

What would you recommend to any tourist?

A houseboat trip on the Murray and waterskiing on Lake Boga.

At the 2011 census, Swan Hill had a population of 9,894

European explorer Major Thomas Mitchell named Swan Hill in 1836

The Burke and Wills expedition reached Swan Hill on September 6, 1860, on their famous journey across Australia from Melbourne to the Top End.

The Pioneer Settlement’s 'Kaiser' Stereoscopic Panorama Theatre, built in 1895, is one of only three or four in the world. It is the only one which operates all day, every day.
