Adelaide will be looking to make it three wins in a row when it takes on GWS at Adelaide Oval this Saturday.

And although former Adelaide ruckman Sam Jacobs is well and truly entrenched back in Crows heartland, he does have a soft spot for the Giants after being traded to GWS at the end of 2019.

Speaking on Triple M’s The Crows Radio Show, Jacobs said an honest conversation with Adelaide list manager Justin Reid led to the trade to the Giants.

“It all started because as a Club (Adelaide) we were going through a rebuild,” Jacobs said.

“In 2019, I missed eight weeks and then Reilly (O'Brien) was able to get his opportunity, which was fantastic for him.

“It took me probably another eight weeks to break into the team.

“I finished the year in the Crows team but… I sort of got told that more likely than not I’d be spending more time in the SANFL.

“The Club respectfully gave me a really good offer, but when I got told I would be playing SANFL more likely than not, I guess I thought I had a bit left still, so I wanted to have a chance.

“Phil Davis is one of my great mates, the Giants were coming off a Grand Final and I was still hungry to have success, so I think it all aligned to go to the Giants and to give it a go.”

"I was still hungry to have success...It all aligned to go to the Giants and to give it a go.

Jacobs, now 34, said he left Adelaide on good terms but decided to head to the Giants with a hope of giving himself one more opportunity to win a Premiership.

“I obviously never entertained the idea of leaving the Crows, as you know I’m a massive Crows fan,” Jacobs said.

“I left on fantastic terms with the Crows and I have always had a really close relationship with Justin Reid and even through that period he said it might be an opportunity worth looking at.

“I appreciated his honesty because yes, it would’ve been great to stay in the SANFL and play there but as competitive as we are as players, I was still keen on playing AFL and giving myself the chance to hopefully win a flag.

“My wife (Isabelle) is a country girl as well from Yorke Peninsula, so for us it was ‘What an opportunity to be able to go to Sydney’.

“I guess we took it as a bit of a positive - what an opportunity to go to Sydney at this stage it was for two years - go up there, try something different, meet some new people and also to develop as a player and person.

“Everything just seemed to marry up and that’s why I came to the decision I did.”

Despite being keen and ready for the new opportunity in Sydney, it did not go the way Jacobs had hoped, with the Covid-19 pandemic hitting the globe.

Jacobs was given a two-year contract with the Giants but only remained at the club for one season, before returning to South Australia and then soon after, the Crows.

His AFL career ended after 208 games with Carlton, Adelaide and GWS but Jacobs is now back at the Crows working as the Club’s engagement executive as well as helping out with the SANFL side’s coaching team.

“All pre-season (at the Giants) was great, that was normal and then we played Geelong on the Saturday night Round One in Sydney and we had a really good win,” Jacobs said.

“Then from there everything got really hard in terms of moving around the country.

“From there we decided 14 years at the top level was probably enough and my wife was pregnant again at that stage so it just got a bit too much to ask and we decided to move home.

“They are an absolutely fantastic club, the Giants, and I am very thankful for them for having shown interest in me and given me an opportunity.

“I left (Adelaide) on good terms and that just shows by me coming back to the Club I love.

“I’m always going to be a Crows man naturally, of course, so it was a really seamless transition coming back.”

Tune in this Sunday at 9am on Triple M Adelaide for the next instalment of Sauce and Thomo.
