Three-time Premiership player Sarah Allan says the Crows’ pre-season training trip to Darwin has strengthened team bonds, while giving their footy skills and fitness a boost.

The Crows AFLW side enjoyed a four-day trip to the top end and took part in many activities, including training with the Australian Defence Force’s First Brigade at the Robertson Barracks.

Serving members of the ADF led the Crows through obstacle courses, abseiling and fitness drills, with an aim of testing the players both physically and mentally.

Allan’s older sister Megan served with the ADF, while her younger sister and former Crows player Jess is a serving member.

Speaking to AFC Media, the reliable defender said completing training with the First Brigade was special, given her siblings’ connections with the Australian Defence Force.

“I’ve heard lots of stories of their experiences, obviously it's different to what we got, but it was a nice glimpse into what they had to go through,” Allan said.

“I was able to put myself in their shoes for a bit, which was great for me personally.

“But also as a team, for everyone to experience that is just something that brings everyone together and it’s a great team building exercise.”

In preparation for their Premiership defence, the Crows also completed football drills during an open training session at TIO Stadium on Saturday morning.

Allan said the side was now ready for the challenge of defending their Premiership, with all 18 teams involved in the AFLW Competition.

“It was nice to get out there and get a solid training session done while we were away,” Allan said.

“We aren’t far from another season starting, so it’s about getting those final preps in place to ensure we are ready.”

Despite the gruelling training sessions, players and coaches were also given some time to relax, with visits to Crocodylus Park and Litchfield National Park.

Allan, who notched her 50th game in Season Six’s Preliminary Final against Fremantle, said the trip also allowed players to get to know each other outside of footy.

“Obviously with the Covid situation over the past few years, it’s been tough to get away for a pre-season trip,” Allan said.

“With our short pre-season, it’s been nice to use the time to grow relationships and bring everyone together.

“We’ve been pretty lucky that we’ve always kept our team pretty much together and we’ve only had a few additions each year.

“But our new players for this coming season have fit into our culture really well.”

Adelaide kicks off Season Seven with a Grand Final rematch against Melbourne at Norwood Oval on Friday, August 26.
