afc.com.au remembers some of Adelaide’s greatest moments of the 2006 season.There are many memorable Crows moments to be cherished from this season, by Adelaide supporters and football fans alike. And we also want to hear about your special moments.After a number of discussions throughout the Adelaide Football Club hallways and offices, we have come up with 15 beauties:Mark Ricciuto; No pre-season, no fitness, no worries: Round 1 v CollingwoodAfter battling injuries throughout the last months of pre-season, Ricciuto was named for the season opener despite a complete lack of match practice. But he lined up at full-forward and kicked six goals in a magnificent performance against one of the AFL’s best defenders in James Clement.Ben Hart; big grab in his 300th game: Round 2 v West CoastIt was Ben Hart’s 300th game and he celebrated the occasion in fine style, soaring onto the shoulders of his opponent to pull down a spectacular mark in front of the members stand. The grab was similar to that of his Mark of the Year winner in 1996 and was a memorable addition to Hart’s career highlights reel.Brett Burton; freakish goal: Round 3 v MelbourneA list containing pages and pages of numerous ‘Birdman’ moments could easily be compiled and one of the best was surely his effort against Melbourne at Carrara. Burton had the ball and was pinned on the boundary line, deep in the forward pocket. Under pressure, he released a check-sided, rolling kick towards the goal. The ball bent and curved and eventually crossed the goal line untouched.Ivan Maric; first game, first goal magic: Round 6 v Port AdelaideYoung ruckman Ivan Maric found himself in the forward pocket, lining up for goal in his first game of AFL football. As he nervously attempted to run around the man on the mark, he had his kick smothered. However, he recovered to pick the ball up and slot it through the goals with a beautiful kick.Andrew McLeod, celebrating his 250th game in style: Round 10 v EssendonThe night was a celebration of McLeod’s great career and seemed to follow a script. The ball floated above the head of his opponent and McLeod climbed up his back to pull down a spectacular mark in front of the packed Members stand. It was the AFL Mark of the Week.Trent Hentschel; eight goal personal best effort: Round 10 v EssendonYoung gun Trent Hentschel was having a fine season, highlighted by this eight=goal game. Against a hapless Essendon side, Hentschel was unstoppable. He consistently found space to kick goal after goal. He accounted for a variety of opponents and led from the front in a match dominated by the Crows.Mark Ricciuto; the first goal in his 300th game: Round 16 v KangaroosThe build-up to Mark Ricciuto’s 300th game was nothing short of amazing. The crowd eagerly watched every move of the Crows captain, waiting for something special to happen. Early in the first quarter, Ricciuto gathered the bal and with precise skill snapped the ball around his body from 25m for a goal. Crows supporters were elated, and the moment was fitting for a celebration of one of Adelaide’s greatest.Nathan Bassett; 22 marks, AFL record: Round 18 V CollingwoodIn a high possession, somewhat scrappy event against Collingwood in Round 18, Nathan Bassett racked up kicks, handballs and marks. He continued to find space and amassed 22 marks for the game, an AFL record.Richard Douglas; first AFL goal: Round 22 v MelbourneFirst-year midfielder Richard Douglas, making the most his opportunities, offered his side an explosion of pace and agility. Playing against Melbourne he received a lobbed handball from Matthew Clarke and put his foot to the floor. He outran his opponent and kicked a long, left foot goal from outside the 50 metre mark.Rhett Biglands; dance-then-goal: Qualifying Final v FremantleBiglands produced a magnificent goal in the forward pocket of the Southern end against the Fremantle Dockers. With the agility of someone much lighter than his 198cm, 104kg frame he ran at his opponent, shuffled backwards, stepped aside and then ran around his opponent into an open goal. It was an unbelievable sight.Jason Porplyzia; inspirational run: Qualifying Final v FremantlePorplyzia received his second chance with the Crows as a result of hard work and his individual effort against Fremantle in the Qualifying Final much the same. He floated deep into defence to take a courageous mark, preventing a Dockers goal. He delivered the ball to a team mate and continued to work towards the next contest. Porplyzia then took on a number of opponents along the boundary line on the wing, kept the ball in play and delivered to Ian Perrie, who kicked an important goal. It was a memorable moment that drew admiration from all, including his coach.Matthew Clarke; big goal from a big man: Qualifying Final v FremantleBig Matty Clarke, who arguably hit career best form late in the season, kicked a rare gem of a goal in the Qualifying Final against Fremantle. The ball was heading out of Adelaide’s forward line before Matthew Bode laid a crunching tackle. Nathan van Berlo gathered the crumbs and handballed the ball to Clarke who drilled a long goal on the run from 45 metres out. It was a memorable piece of play from the experienced ruckman.The crowd; Supporters three-quarter time rev-up: Qualifying Final v FremantleAt three quarter time, the Qualifying Final against Fremantle was hanging in the balance. It was at this time that the loyal Adelaide crowd gave lifted their support to another level. Chants of “Ad-el-aide” filled the air, and it sounded as if every one of the 42,000 strong crowd was involved. Neil Craig couldn’t hear himself speak.. Many of the players and coaches believed that such huge support from the crowd gave the team the inspiration they needed to get through.Brett Burton; welcome back screamer: Preliminary Final v West CoastAfter spending seven weeks sidelined by a hamstring injury, Burton picked up exactly where he left off. He floated into West Coast’s attacking 50 and perched on the back of former-Crow Tyson Stenglein. Burton seemed to sit for an eternity as the 50,000 strong crowd were brought to their feet.Matthew Bode; superb goal: Preliminary Final v West CoastIn the heartbreaking Preliminary Final, Bode produced something special. A number of players surrounded a hotly contested ball only 20 metres from the Crows goal, and Bode was on his back. Showing his superb agility, before his opponents could bat an eye lid Bode was on his feet snapping the ball through for an amazing goal.Do you have any memorable moments from the season?
