Adelaide midfielder Matt Crouch has started 2024 off strong.

He was one of the Crows’ best in their opening round match against the Gold Coast, gathering 33 possessions - 16 of those contested - seven clearances and six tackles.

But the past year hasn’t been easy on the 28-year-old, who found himself in and out of the Crows’ AFL side for much of 2023 after struggling with injuries and dips in form.

Then, after earning his spot back for Adelaide’s Round 19 clash against Melbourne, he played the remaining six matches of 2023, averaging 29.1 disposals a game.

A solid pre-season and plenty of hard work helped Crouch maintain that form and an inclusion in the Crows’ 2024 Round One team.

Speaking on this week’s episode of The Crows Show, Crouch said missing out on selection was difficult to process but he continued to work hard and prove he was still good enough.

“It was a tough time, obviously everyone wants to play AFL and I was no different through that period,” Crouch said.

“I felt like when I came in late last year I played my role and played some decent footy, so I wanted to carry that momentum into this season and hopefully I can do that.

“I just wanted to contribute and help the young boys out at that (SANFL) level and then when I got my chance (I wanted to) play well and stay in the team and help us win games of footy, that’s what we are here for.”

Crouch said being able to enjoy an injury free pre-season ahead of this campaign had also helped.

“I’m definitely feeling really, really good within my body,” Crouch said.

“I had some obviously some big struggles with groin and hip surgery but my body is in a really good position at the moment.

“I was able to complete virtually all of the pre-season, so that always helps and my body is feeling great.”

The 2017 Malcolm Blight Medal winner, who this year entered his 11th AFL season, said there were two main motivators for him this campaign.

“What motivates me is clearly to win a Premiership,” Crouch said.

“Obviously to represent my family, I’ve got a little daughter now to play for her and my family is something that really motivates me.

“Early days, it’s just to get out there and get a game of AFL but as your career goes on, it’s team, success and playing for your family.”

Also on The Crows Show this week, fan favourite Graham Johncock speaks about continuing a family legacy at Mallee Park Football Club in Port Lincoln, while forward Riley Thilthorpe joins to discuss his recovery from a knee injury.

The Crows Show airs on Channel 7 on Sunday, March 24, at 3pm.
