Adelaide defender Jordon Butts had just produced a clinical performance, but his teammates still couldn’t get him to crack a cheeky grin, according to a fellow backman.
Butts nullified the influence of Richmond key forward and two-time Premiership winner Tom Lynch to just two touches and one goal during the Crows’ win at the MCG on Sunday.
And, according to teammate Brodie Smith, Butts remained his serious self post-game, still as focused as ever.
“I love him (Butts), I absolutely love him,” Smith told Triple M Rocks Footy from the changerooms after the Crows’ 68-point victory.
“He still hasn’t given us a smile, we talk about Maxy (Michalanney) smiling, Buttsy is just in game mode.
“We just pumped him up in the rooms about his job and he still didn’t give us anything.
“It is a whole backline, we work together, Keaney and Woz come across and support, but just a phenomenal game from him, I’m super proud of him.”
The Crows’ commanding win against the Tigers, which put them in third spot on the ladder, came off the back of a strong, team effort, according to Smith.
And the veteran said the side had worked hard on securing victories away from home, after a disappointing record in recent years.
“Our away record is something we’ve worked on and talked about bringing the energy - we are really good at home, we get up and about and our crowd is amazing, they really help us in that space,” Smith said.
“But we’ve really focused on bringing that energy on the road and, as I mentioned, when Maxy kicks the first goal, you see what it does to the boys and the energy it brings.
“That’s something we’re looking to bring to our away games and we definitely did it today.
“As backs, we get to see the forwards celebrate goals all day, so we like to celebrate some spoils and some big intercepts - we can’t let all the forwards have all the fun.”
Sunday’s game marked Smith’s fifth for this year, having been in and out of the side across the first half of the season.
But against the Tigers, the 267-gamer stood tall, recording 20 disposals, five marks and five tackles.
“I guess, individually, trying to get in the side - I’ve been sub a couple of times - so it’s good to get a full game,” Smith said.=
“I have to give credit to all the guys around me, they help me out down there.
“It’s nice to be at half-back when Lairdy gives me the footy and Junior (Wayne Milera), Hingey, Keaney, Buttsy - all these boys are having a really good season, so it’s just nice to be a part of it today.”
Smith also revealed what Senior Coach Matthew Nicks said to the group after the win.
“(He said) our contest early was really good and then we were able to open the game up, Filthy got on the end of a few late, and we broke the game open.
“The focus coming in was contest and to really make it a strong game early.
“We were able to do that, we didn’t give them a sniff, so he’s really proud of us all.
The Crows will be eyeing a second, consecutive victory when they face Melbourne at Adelaide Oval this Sunday, with the first bounce at 2.45pm.
