Adelaide’s first two AFL games at the Gabba in Brisbane both finished with exciting eight-goal last quarter winning onslaughts.

Brisbane, then known as the Bears, moved to the Gabba for home games in 1993 and had beaten Sydney by 162 points the week before the Crows arrived for their Round 10 match.

The hosts led by 20 points late in the first term but Adelaide persisted, reduced the gap to one point by half-time, and again fought back late in the third quarter to cut a 14-point deficit to one point at the last change.

Adelaide hit the front with goals to Stephen Rowe and Matthew Liptak but its lead was only three points with 12 minutes to play. Any doubt about the result quickly disappeared, however, as the Crows piled on the last six goals to win by 37 points.

Tony Modra kicked three for a total of seven, Scott Hodges booted four goals and Rowe finished with three.

The 1994 encounter also had a frantic finish but this time Adelaide recovered from further behind and kicked six goals in an extraordinary last seven minutes, to win by 11 points.

Brisbane controlled most of the match to lead by 28 points during the second quarter, 21 at half-time and 14 points at the last break.

The Bears then kicked the first two goals of the final quarter to lead by 26 points but the Crows found ways to score, a goal to first-gamer Shane Tongerie from the pocket and two goals each to Liptak and Modra suddenly giving Adelaide a six-point lead.

Brisbane responded and was one-point clear with three minutes to play but Crows captain Chris McDermott, Liptak and Nigel Smart goaled in rapid succession to seal a remarkable interstate win.

“This was a very good win,” coach Graham Cornes said post-game. “To come from five goals down when visiting any team is extremely good.”

Tongerie, drafted from Central District, kicked 3.3 on debut and received a Brownlow Medal vote, Modra booted six goals, Liptak kicked four and Greg Anderson starred with 35 disposals.

The Brisbane 1993-94 sides included Marcus Ashcroft – the father of current Lions Will and Levi Ashcroft- and Adrian Fletcher, father of Lions defender Jaspa Fletcher.

Adelaide's Round Seven match against Brisbane at the Gabba this Sunday will be the Crows' 29th AFL game against the Bears and Lions at the venue.

The Crows have won 13 of those contests but have lost four since their last victory, which was by five points in Round 18, 2018.
