Adelaide utility Luke Nankervis will never forget the feeling of seeing his fifth AFL goal float through the big sticks at the Randwick end of the SCG.
After a tense three-quarter battle, the Friday night clash between the Crows and the Swans was on a knife's edge in the early stages of the final term, and needed someone to stand up and take hold of a big moment.
Enter Nankervis.
After an elite piece of forward pressure by teammate Zac Taylor, the ball spilled to Nankervis 40 metres from goal, who quickly summed up the situation and sent a floating shot towards goal.
His effort went straight through the big sticks, and the Crows’ lead was extended to a critical seven points, as they went on to win the game.
Speaking to the media on Saturday morning, Nankervis explained how he felt in the moment and why it was the most important feat of his career to date.
“Yeah, it was pretty cool to be able to have that moment,” Nankervis said.
“I think it was Zac Taylor and Toby Murray's work beforehand that really got me the opportunity to have that shot, and although it was a bit of a floater. I was very happy to see it go through.
“I've kicked a few, as you would say, junk time goals recently, but to kick one in such a critical time of the game like that, it was such an incredible feeling.
“You could see in the celebration I was pretty excited by it, and to have all the boys get around me like they did, it was a great moment for me.”
The importance of the victory wasn’t lost on Nankervis, as he explained what being the first team to beat Sydney at the SCG this season did for the group’s confidence.
“I think they were undefeated this year, so yeah, we came away from that win pretty confident,” Nankervis said.
“They presented a huge challenge for us, especially coming into finals hopefully, so to get the four points is a feather in the cap for us as we continue to improve every week.”
Adelaide takes on Collingwood at Adelaide next Thursday night.
