Don Pyke is embracing coaching from the sidelines following the AFL’s change to the runner rule.

With runners now only allowed on the ground during goal breaks, several AFL coaches have shifted to the interchange for better communication with players.

Despite some teething issues early on, Pyke has taken the rule change as an opportunity to get closer to the game.

“It’s a way I think we can better communicate with our players,” Pyke told The Crows Show, brought to you by Optus.

“The challenge is seeing the game from down there, it is a different level.

“I have great trust in the assistant coaches and Scott Camporeale, who looks after our structural stuff, to give me the feedback I need while I’m down there.”

Former Sydney Swan Dale Lewis spoke in favour of the new runner rule, particularly from a spectator standpoint.

“The bit I like as a footy fan, when the game gets tight or run-ons are happening, you have to work your problems out on your own,” Lewis said.

“You’re relying on the teachings of the week, it’s good because players are having to think.

“I would imagine the coaches first item on the agenda at the end of the year is how to get some middle ground.”

One big naysayer to the rule change, however, was Crows dual premiership coach Malcolm Blight.

“The player’s responsibility is to play, not to see he’s in the right spot” Blight said.

“The coaching role is to help players get through the game.

“I think it’s not right to load everything back on the players.”
