Daniel Talia says he is honoured to be part of Adelaide’s leadership group for the first time.

Talia, 23, was announced on Monday as the newest member of a six-man leadership group alongside Patrick Dangerfield, Rory Sloane, Nathan van Berlo, Scott Thompson and Taylor Walker.

The 2014 Malcolm Blight Medallist said it was another step forward in his development.

“I’m obviously honoured and thrilled to be in there,” Talia said.

“It’s a natural progression for me. Over the last couple of years we’ve had a really young backline, and I feel like I’ve been the one who’s kind of been leading that young group.”

Behind veteran Brent Reilly and the injured Andy Otten, Talia is the most senior Crows defender on the roster in terms of games played (76) on par with fellow All-Australian backman Brodie Smith.

Talia, who has leadership experience from his junior days at Assumption College and the Calder Cannons, said the role had always appealed to him.

“I think it’s the way I’ve been heading anyway and I’ve been working with a lot of the younger backs.

“It’s a bit of a reward for being consistent over the last two years and playing well.”

After a career-best 2014 season, which saw him tame many of the premier key forwards in the competition, Talia could come into contention to take on the Club captaincy.

But Talia said the Crows were blessed with a number of natural leaders who could succeed in the role.

“Any one of us six guys could be captain. It’s not my decision to make, but any six of us could do it.

“It’s not up to the players, it’s up to Phil Walsh.

“Whoever Phil and the board choose there’s a reason for it, so we’ll just wait and see on that one.”

Talia also said he was eager to launch into another pre-season campaign after having minor surgery on his knee during the offseason.

“The knee’s all good. I had a clean-out at the end of the year.

“But I’m back in full training and really looking forward to getting a big pre-season under my belt and improving again next year.”
